For those of you who are new to the blog, or just need an reminder, this all started when I made a post asking if real people think geeks are as cool as we think we are (see post: I'm cool now? 1/19/06). After discussing this topic with Carolyn, we decided to put the question to test by going out some night wearing geek shirts (see it's for science, really it is! 1/24/06). We wanted to see if people who acknowledge us...even maybe hit on us.
well.. March 4th, 2006 we put this plan in action. I have to admit that I was skeptical that anyone would hit on us. I figured that maybe we would get the occasional look at best, but we were determined.
One cannot just go to the bar wearing a geek shirt and expect that to be enough. We had to first prepare ourselves for the experience. How could we possibly do this you ask? Well... spending the day at the zoo and the science center of course! After scoping out some penguins, catching a planetarium show, and sitting in on a science lesson on liquid nitrogen; we were ready.
We arrived at Howl at the Moon dressed in geek shirts and ready to have a good time. Words alone cannot express the coolness of our shirts, so I will post the picture...

An hour or two of loads of fun (and alcohol) passed when we got the results we were looking for. There were at least three events that proved that geeks are in fact cool. Two of which happened to me and one happened to Nicole/Mike...
I'm gonna start with me... 'cause it is my blog. So, I've had a few drinks at this point and decided that is was time to use the bathroom.
<:side rant:>
Here is the problem with bars in Baltimore. They have these people who feel the need to hang out in the bathroom and put soap on your hands, brush off your back, and give you a hand towel (all while washing your hands... not while actually using the facilities). This is all fine and good, but they have the dreaded money bowl on the sink. I mean... you cannot just take the towel from the guy, dry off your hands, and put it in the bag without giving the guy a buck when you are done. A buck! Just to use the bathroom. I mean.. it is bad enough that I have to pay 4 bucks for a beer... now I have to pay a dollar to use the bathroom... crazy! Anyway...
<:/side rant:>
On the way back from the bathroom, two things that never happened to me before happened back to back. A random girl stopped me, gave me a hug that lasted for a good 5 seconds (A long time when you are hugging a stranger and trying to figure out what the heck is going on), and then went back to what she was doing. Needless to say, I was confused... but I know the power of the geek shirt can be hard to resist. After this (I wasn't even back to my table yet), a guy stopped me and told me his friend (female) was interested in my phone number. Again, something that had not happened to me before. I gave it to him and we parted ways. The girl he gave the number to then showed up and we chatted for about 10 minutes (Howl and the Moon is a loud place... not good for conversation) and I got her number. I would say that this alone just about proves the geek theory, but then something else happened...
apparently some random guy decided that he would buy Nicole (wearing the I heart nerds shirt) a drink! She accepted the offer and gave her free beer to her boyfriend (Mike... the guy in the dork shirt). This was the icing on the cake and the final event that proved our theory... Geeks are cool. Case closed!
On a side note, I now have a date this Thursday... duckpin bowling!
